Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S., author of "Fat Flush for Life: The Year-Round Super Detox Plan to Boost Your Metabolism and Keep the Weight Off Permanently" has advice on how to do a Fat Flush that can help you keep off weight and get rid of tummy fat. She explains, "Chronic headaches have disappeared, rosacea has diminished, psoriasis has been alleviated and food allergies have been controlled. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that a diet/detox program could have such profound effects of so many people."
Commitmentnow.com: What is a fat flush and what can it do for your body?
Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S.: Fat Flush targets weight loss, cleansing, and purification. As the name implies, the program is designed to purge fats and toxin-laden fluids from the body while increasing metabolism, eliminating bloat, and speeding up fat loss.
But my readers tell me Fat Flushing delivers so many more unexpected benefits: glowing skin, a dramatic reduction in the appearance of cellulite, high energy levels, hormonal balance, mental clarity, better sleep, and an overall feeling of well-being.
Commitmentnow.com: What are some ways to decrease tummy fat?
Dr. Gittleman: Studies have shown that at least 6 grams (a heaping tablespoon) of fish oil can target abdominal fat as can 3 - 6 grams of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). A smoothie in the morning is a tasty way to blend in the fish oil and CLA is available in health food stores as a dietary supplement to be taken with meals.
Reducing stress might also be a key since tummy fat has been linked to high levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
Commitmentnow.com: How did you discover that a fat flush can significantly change a person's health? How did this understanding impact your own life?
Dr. Gittleman: Fat Flush was created as a one chapter adjunct to my first book Beyond Pritikin published in 1988. First promoted as "The Two Week Fat Flush," it was used for over ten years as a seasonal detox by many of my readers who reported outstanding weight loss, inch loss, and cellulite loss.
Little by little they asked for an expanded diet program, a maintenance program, exercise program and tips on eating out.
Since its initial debut in Beyond Pritikin over two decades ago, Fat Flush has taken on a life of its own and in 2001 finally evolved into The Fat Flush Plan which spawned five other books - The Fat Flush Cookbook, The Fat Flush Journal and Shopping Guide, Fat Flush Foods, and Fat Flush Fitness Plan.
Millions of people have been positively helped in their quest for long lasting weight loss, overall wellness, glowing skin, and looking and feeling younger.
Chronic headaches have disappeared, rosacea has diminished, psoriasis has been alleviated and food allergies have been controlled. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that a diet/detox program could have such profound effects of so many people.
Men, women, and children have not only transformed their weight, they have transformed their lives. As one ardent Fat Flusher once told me, "We can't have soaring spirits when are bodies are unclean."
Commitmentnow.com: Why should a detox program accompany a weight loss program?
Dr. Gittleman: Detox should always accompany weight loss because shrinking fat stores during weight loss release oil-soluble toxins that can dislodge and relocate to other tissues and glands of the body.
It is highly suspected that the thyroid is especially sensitive to toxic overload and can become sluggish, slowing down metabolism and thereby interfering with effective and long-term weight loss and maintenance.
Commitmentnow.com: How can a Fat Flush help one get rid of food allergies?
Dr. Gittleman: Since allergies can be associated with a deficiency of proper digestive enzymes, there are two things I would do first and foremost. The first is to shore up the body's production of the stomach acid hydrochloric acid (known as HCL) by either supplementing with a capsule or tablet or start each meal with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in eight ounces of water which mimics HCL activity.
Secondly, I would use a plant-based digestive enzyme containing protease for proteins, amylase for starch, and lipase for fats to assist with the HCL supplementation.
The other alternative would be avoidance for at least a month of any food that you suspect may be a hidden food allergen or sensitivity. For example, wheat, rye, barley and kamut are gluten-containing and gluten is now recognized as one of the most prevalent food allergies impacting 1 in 133 adults.
Read food labels carefully and use non-gluten grains such as quinoa (technically a seed), amaranth, brown rice, and buckwheat.
Since gluten and casein intolerance go hand in hand, avoiding milk and associated milk products (most cheeses and yogurt) might also be helpful.
Commitmentnow.com: What role does cranberry juice and water have in fat flushing? What brands of cranberry juice do you recommend?
Dr. Gittleman: Cranberry helps to cleanse the lymphatic system, the body's garbage disposal system. It is a bioflavinoid-rich juice which is pH balanced and contains several unique acids which function as digestive enzymes to "eat up" fatty globules in the lympth and clean up bacteria in the gut. I like no-sugar cranberry juice like Just Cranberry from Knudsen.
Commitmentnow.com: What products do you recommend for those who want to do a fat flush?
Dr. Gittleman: In addition to real foods from slimming oils, powerful proteins, colorful veggies, low-glycemic fruits, thermogenic herbs and spices as well as high fiber chia and flax, I also recommend the Fat Flush Kit. The Fat Flush Kit contains a Dieters Multi, GLA (essential fatty acid) formula, and Weight Loss Formula that supports and nourishes liver function and carbohydrate cravings. (It is available through my distributor UNI KEY Health Systems at www.unikeyhealth.com).
Commitmentnow.com: Why are there different fat flushes for different seasons? What role do the changing seasons play in our health?
Dr. Gittleman: The influence of the seasons on the delicate balance of your body is one of the most vital but overlooked aspects of total health.
In Fat Flush for Life, the companion guide to the classic Fat Flush Plan, I created a Fat Flush for every season to take advantage of local, sustainable, and seasonal produce offerings and provide special support and nourishment for the corresponding activated organs of spring, summer, fall and winter.
The body thrives and metabolism is sparked when we tap into nature's harmonious cycles by using special foods, tea, herbs, wellness techniques, and indoor and outdoor workouts to keep the body cool in spring and summer and heated up in autumn and winter. Immunity is enhanced as we take our cue from Mother Nature.
Commitmentnow.com: Tell us about some of the products you recommend for a fat flush, such as whey powder, chia seeds, flaxseed or fish oil?
Dr. Gittleman: The Fat Flush Body Whey protein powder provides an easily digestible protein that is the basis of satisfying smoothies on the program. Whey contains several amino acids which act as precursors for the production of gluthatione - the liver's premier antioxidant (For those who are vegan, I have created a Fat Flush Body Protein which is a combination of brown rice and yellow pea protein.)
Chia seeds are an exceptionally high source of fiber, vegetable-based calcium, and Omega 3's. In fact, one ounce provides a whopping 5 grams of omega-3s, 10.6 grams of soluble fiber and 4.4 grams of protein.
Flaxseeds are another great source of omega-3s and fibers while fish oil is a treasure trove of DHA and EPA, essential fatty acids found to be helpful for brain, heart, joints, and skin beauty.
Commitmentnow.com: What role does repressed emotions and self-saboting patterns have in losing weight?
Dr. Gittleman: Emotional overeating is a major underlying factor in weight gain. Learning to neutralize self-sabotaging emotions is one of the main reasons I use the Bach flower remedies as part of the weight loss protocol. The remedies work without the benefit of will power or even belief in their efficacy.
Used since the 1930's and developed by a medical doctor, the Bach remedies can augment weight loss, especially if there is an emotional component. My favorites from the program include Walnut for making a fresh start, oak for endurance, and crabapple for cleansing the body, mind, and spirit.
Commitmentnow.com: How does one do a spring fat flush?
Dr. Gittleman: My Spring Fat Flush incorporates the fresh, seasonal produce of springtime (think baby asparagus and fresh peas) which helps to counter the excess fat and mucus buildup from the winter. The diet plan, along with the spring fitness and wellness components, will help refresh and rebuild the liver and gallbladder - the organs which demand more attention and tender loving care (TLC) during the spring.
